Small Works Custom Framing

We build truly custom, closed-corner frames for artists, galleries, individuals, restaurants and establishments in the Bay Area. Unlike typical retail frame shops, we make our frames from raw wood, sustainably harvested in the US, and do all the woodwork and finishing in house with Zero VOC finishes. Almost all components of our frames are sourced from materials made here in the United States. We partner with local mills for much of our stock and keep ourselves to high labor standards, providing a living wage and healthcare.

  • Well, it’s almost a cliché that framing is expensive. We would encourage you to get quotes, but whereas many frame shops offer “chop and join” moulding of low quality and which are made with exploitative labor and environmental practices at very high mark-ups and where “off the shelf” mounting products are used to affix art into frames, we make everything here in our woodshop in San Francisco using the best materials sourced as ethically as possible and employ conservation best practices for mounting and preserving your art. So ‘expensive’ is a relative term in light of the difference in quality. Again, we encourage you to get quotes, often times we hear that we are the same price as other frame shops but for a superior product.

  • We're proud to work with some of the Bay Area's finest including SFMOMA, BAMPFA, Haines Gallery, Jessica Silverman Gallery, Geremia Design, Nicole Hollis, Chroma, and Studio Ahead.
